In India, most of us have grown up drinking Haldi Doodh. It has taken fancy names today such as Golden Milk, Turmeric Latte, etc. It is amazing to see this combination to provide long-term health benefits.
Haldi Doodh is a powerful healing & anti-inflammatory drink.
Turmeric is fat-soluble so it's taken along with milk. Adding black pepper increases its bioavailability.
Two important components are Turmeric & Milk. Both these components have to be healthy to reap the benefits.
Traditionally, we always had Haldi Doodh made in cow’s milk. There are numerous problems with the cow milk available today.
Most milk comes from Hybrid cows. The complex casein protein present in hybrid cow's milk is inflammatory & challenging to digest.
Packaging in plastic packets causes plastic leaching into the milk. This disrupts the hormonal balance in the body.
Adulteration is high
Pasteurisation kills the healthy bacteria in the milk & makes it difficult for digestion
So, it is recommended to use either Raw (non-pasteurised) Organic milk from native cows or go for plant-based mylk.
Here is an easy recipe of Healthy Vegan Haldi Doodh.
Heat coconut mylk in a saucepan. Go for homemade coconut mylk to avoid any additives/preservatives. Check out the recipe for coconut milk under the vegan mylk section.
Add grated turmeric root or 1/2 tsp organic turmeric powder
Add grated fresh ginger (can opt for ginger powder)
Black pepper
Piece of cinnamon stick or 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg powder
Can sweeten with some organic jaggery. Avoid honey as it’s not advisable to heat honey or add it to a very hot beverage
Keep stirring the contents overheat. This is an important step or else it can split.
